Hi Tim,

Thanks for sharing with us your insight into Bangladesh.

As a British Bangladeshi who arrived in the UK at the age of four I share many of your sentiments. The rawness of life you experienced there was what shocked at first then intrigued me also. Life, emotions, joys, insecurities are indeed laid bare, stripped of any safety/comfort buffers. Especially so to one arriving from a lifestyle of western securities and 'comforts'.

Dark personal experiences motivated by greed contrasted against the simple natural beauty of land and every day life still roll around in my mind begging to be disected, interpreted and digested.

I could go on but will refrain on this rare occasion. Once again, thanks for sharing with us your experiences. It has truly been a pleasure reading the experiences of a 'white' westerner of a country which fires such a troubled mixture of emotions within me.

In Bangladesh People’s expectation & aspiration are for democratic system with arrangement of accountability and fair law like TORT LAW to combat malpractices and repression of people.

But all are frustrating till date

Several Lac Suits / Litigations are pending in Court due to illegal occupation of land ignoring documents and title right by Miscreants,
.
Land Survey Department Settlement Office and their Subordinate Office are also responsible for such activities as they prepare records & issue parcha in favor of land occupier ignoring deed & title right. depriving the actual land owner. intentionally.

It shall continue until TORT LAW are not allowed as valid law in Bangladesh like USA, EUROPE COUNTR, INDIA & NEPAL .
TORT LAW also protect poor people becoming more poor due to repression

Correction of records & parcha through Court is matter of life long litigation process & an expensive system ,which common people can not bear meantime the face of land changes.

GOVERNMENT may take action at earliest possible time to abolish system of POSSESSION RIGHT without any valid document or title right.

And shall also allow the application TORT LAW in Bangladesh without any delay to established accountability & prevent malpractices

It will be highly appreciated if you kindly circulate the above in all level for creating awareness among the people and international community as well as Patriot Political Worker. Leader or Intellectual Group, & Policy Maker of the Country .

Iam a returned Volunteer from Bangladesh 2007/2008.what has been written is not so new to me.If you want to become a volunteer Bangladesh should be the last place to think about. The program office is not helpful at all,its full of very un professional officers whose main aim is jast to make money on the expense of volunteers. The accomodation is not only poor but so wanting. In my life i have never worked with a dictator like the VSOB country director who is not only feared but taken as a small god.Instead of sharing skills in Bangladesh most volunteers share sorrows and change no lives.I wish Shahanah(CD)the best of luck as she strives to destroy the VSO image

It was really good to hear what you had to say. Because am Bengali I've been to Bangladesh twice the last time i went was in 2005 for 2 months i really enjoyed it. i stayed in the village area in the district SUNAMGANJ in Sylhet. And i thought it was fantastic my dad built a house for us to see, believe it it or not it was painted PINK. We have a big family there so we got to see everyone. I enjoyed staying in the village as it was quieter and had more land around. I went into the town sylhet for shopping but it was so congested, noisy and busy.
But what i would like to say is am glad you put all the negative side of Bangladesh aside and saw it in a more positive side.
I definately hope to visit Bangladesh again soon.

Hi!
I am doing YFD this year and I have just been offered a placement in Bangladesh for September and this post summed up a lot of my nervousness - I am going to be pretty isolated I believe, probably the only white woman in the south west of Bangladesh and have no idea what my job involves due to my employers poor English.
I would love to hear your thoughts on Bangladesh and the work you did with VSO.
Thanks,
Sarah
